’Gnatology’ is dealing with the description of the masticatory organ – including teeth, masseters,
mandibles and the mandibular joint – and with the examination of its normal and pathologic
From dental medicine angle the usage of ’gnatology’ means a thorough examination of the patients
waiting for a treatment or for a tooth prosthesis.
During gnatology the future capability to wear a prosthesis will be mapped (shortage of room,
aesthetic effect), and will be analysed in regards of the possible existing deformities in the
masticatory organ (pathological wear of teeth, abnormal – so called forced – bite, ’parafunctional’
These above mentioned deformations are detected often not only during the dentist’s examination
but by the patients as well who feel these symptoms as complaints.
These can be e.G. night grinding of the teeth, mandible arthralgia caused by hereditary or acquired –
so called – deep-bite caused by uncomfortable muscular pain, or face swelling.
The problems can be discovered only by a thorough survey of the patient’s complaints and by a short
– about 10 minutes long – exploration of the masticatory organ.
In complicated cases we are directing the patients to specialists.
Only by the preservation of the healthy status of the complete masticatory organ can we prepare
tooth prosthesis in good quality and on a proper professional level.
